Size: 25 Seeds

Make room for a striking kitchen-garden crop with Green Globe artichoke seeds. Broad foliage and tall flower stems give the plants architectural presence, while tightly closed green buds provide the familiar artichoke harvest for steaming, roasting, and other cooked dishes. Leave a few buds unpicked to enjoy their violet, thistle-like flowers instead.

Choose your seed quantity

This listing is for seeds to plant, not live plants or harvested artichokes. Choose:

  • 25 seeds
  • 100 seeds
  • 1 oz seeds
  • 1/4 lb seeds
  • 1 lb pack

Bulk options are sold by weight. Seed counts in weight-based packs vary by lot and are not guaranteed.

Crop details

  • Variety: Green Globe
  • Crop: Globe artichoke
  • Harvest: Unopened flower buds
  • Garden appearance: Large foliage and violet flowers if buds are left to open
  • Approximate size: Up to 4 feet tall and potentially 6 feet wide under suitable conditions
  • Light: Full sun in suitable climates; afternoon protection may help in hot locations
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture
  • Life cycle: Perennial where climate and winter conditions allow; sometimes grown as a seasonal crop elsewhere

This listing is for Green Globe and does not establish an improved strain, reduced-spine selection, or guaranteed number of buds. Seed-grown plants can vary in size and performance.

Climate and harvest expectations

Artichokes favor a long, relatively cool growing season. Extreme heat, winter cold, and wet soil can limit performance. Perennial survival and first-year harvests are not guaranteed, especially in short-season or hot, humid gardens.

Flowering can depend on plant age and exposure to cool conditions. Green Globe should not be treated as a guaranteed first-year annual producer or an 85-day crop in every garden.

Starting seeds

  1. Start indoors approximately 8–12 weeks before your intended outdoor planting date, allowing room for substantial seedlings.
  2. Use clean containers with drainage holes and a free-draining seed-starting mix.
  3. Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep and water gently.
  4. Keep the medium evenly moist, not saturated, and provide moderate warmth.
  5. Provide strong light and airflow after emergence, and pot seedlings on before roots become crowded.

Emergence may take approximately 10–21 days under suitable conditions, with variation between seeds. Do not automatically refrigerate damp seeds: seed stratification and exposing established seedlings to cool conditions are different treatments. Follow lot-specific instructions and locally appropriate growing guidance.

Cool exposure and transplanting

A period of cool conditions for established seedlings may encourage flowering, but timing and effectiveness depend on the variety, seedling development, and climate. Do not freeze seedlings or expose tender indoor growth abruptly to cold in an attempt to force a harvest.

Gradually acclimate plants to outdoor sun and wind. Transplant when local conditions are suitable, soil is workable, and damaging cold is unlikely. In mild-winter regions, a locally appropriate fall planting window may be useful; in cold regions, an early indoor start may help without guaranteeing first-year buds.

Spacing and garden preparation

Choose a permanent or seasonal bed with generous space and good drainage. Incorporate finished compost if needed. Allow approximately 4 feet between plants and 5–6 feet between rows, increasing space where plants grow especially large.

Set seedlings at roughly the same depth as in their nursery containers and water gently. Avoid low spots that stay wet, and manage weeds while plants establish rather than relying on mature foliage to suppress them.

Growing care

  • Maintain consistent root-zone moisture, particularly while buds develop.
  • Mulch around established plants to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, keeping material away from the crown.
  • Feed according to soil needs and fertilizer label directions.
  • Inspect for aphids, slugs, and other local pests.
  • Remove damaged growth and maintain airflow around large plants.

Containers require substantial root space and careful moisture management; a roomy garden bed is often more practical for mature plants.

Harvesting edible buds

Harvest while buds are firm and their bracts are still tightly closed, before they open into flowers. Use clean pruners or a suitable knife to cut the bud stem, leaving a short length attached.

The main bud generally develops before smaller side buds. Judge each bud by firmness and closed bracts rather than expecting every bud to reach the same diameter. Once flowers open, the buds are past the usual edible harvest stage.

In the kitchen

Wash harvested buds and prepare them according to your recipe. Steam, simmer, roast, or cook the trimmed hearts as desired. Remove the fibrous choke from mature buds as part of preparation. Refrigerate harvested artichokes promptly and use while fresh.

After harvest and overwintering

Plants may continue growing after harvest where conditions remain favorable. Remove spent flower stems and manage old foliage as needed. In climates suited to perennial culture, protect crowns from damaging cold and prolonged wetness using locally appropriate methods.

In colder or unsuitable climates, plants may not survive winter. Neither repeated annual harvests nor a particular plant lifespan is guaranteed.

Seed storage

Store unused seeds sealed in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture and temperature extremes. Seeds supplied are for planting, not direct consumption.
