Dwarf Blue Curled Kale Seeds - Compact Curly Leaf Greens
Free shipping on orders $34.95+ to the contiguous U.S. — most items qualify. Live plants, plant bulbs, and black plastic nursery crates ship separately. Orders are typically processed the next business day.
Dwarf Blue Curled kale brings tightly curled, blue-green leaves to garden beds, raised beds, and roomy containers. Grow it for tender baby leaves or allow plants to develop for repeated outer-leaf harvests. A few established plants can put fresh greens within easy reach for soups, sautés, and everyday meals.
What you receive
This listing is for seeds to plant, not live plants or harvested greens. Choose from:
- 200-seed packet
- 500 seeds
- 1/4 oz, approximately 2,000 seeds
- 1 oz, approximately 8,000 seeds
- 1/4 lb
- 1 lb pack
- 5 lb sack
Weight-based packs are sold by weight. Approximate seed counts vary by lot.
Three ways to grow
- Microgreens: Harvested as young seedlings, with a mild, fresh flavor. An approximate 8–12-day harvest window depends on light, temperature, and the stage you prefer.
- Baby greens: Pick small, tender leaves for salads and quick cooking.
- Garden kale: Grow plants farther apart for larger curled leaves and repeated picking.
The microgreen harvest window is not the maturity time for garden kale. Larger-leaf harvests may begin around 60 days under suitable conditions, with timing varying by season and growing method.
Growing microgreens
Before using any seed lot for microgreens, confirm that it is untreated and suitable for that purpose. Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, and clean water.
- Spread seeds evenly over moist growing medium without piling them on top of one another.
- Press gently into contact with the surface and keep evenly moist during germination.
- Once seedlings emerge, provide good light and airflow. Remove any cover promptly as growth develops.
- Water gently, avoiding standing water and persistently wet foliage.
- Cut seedlings above the growing medium with clean scissors at your preferred stage. Do not include roots or growing medium.
Discard any tray showing mold, decay, or an unpleasant smell. Wash harvested greens thoroughly and refrigerate promptly.
Starting garden plants
Plan spring or late-summer sowings for growth during cool, mild weather, following your local planting calendar. Start indoors or sow directly into fertile, well-drained soil.
- Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep.
- Water gently and keep soil evenly moist, not saturated.
- Provide bright light as seedlings develop.
- Thin or transplant approximately 12 inches apart, allowing extra space where plants become crowded.
- Leave approximately 18–24 inches between rows for airflow and easy harvesting.
Gradually acclimate indoor-grown seedlings before transplanting outdoors. For containers, use a pot with drainage holes and enough root space for mature growth.
Garden care
- Light: Full sun; light afternoon shade can help during hot weather.
- Water: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during establishment and dry spells.
- Soil: Use fertile soil that drains freely, and feed according to soil needs and fertilizer label directions.
- Mulch: Apply lightly around established plants, keeping it away from stems.
- Pests: Check regularly for caterpillars and aphids, including on leaf undersides.
Cool conditions generally favor leaf quality. Cold tolerance does not guarantee winter survival; plant maturity, weather, and protection all matter.
Harvesting garden kale
Pick a modest number of young leaves once plants are well established. For larger leaves, harvest from the lower outside of the plant, leaving the center intact and enough foliage for recovery. Avoid stripping plants bare. Continued production depends on plant health and growing conditions.
Kitchen use and storage
Wash leaves thoroughly. Remove tough central ribs from larger leaves, then chop into soups and stews or sauté with your favorite seasonings. Tender young leaves can be used in salads. Refrigerate promptly and use while fresh.
Storing unused seeds
Keep seeds sealed in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture and temperature extremes. Seeds are supplied for planting, not direct consumption.
