Size: 1000 Seeds

Grow red bunching onions for mild onion flavor, red-colored lower stems, and tender green leaves. Harvest young as scallions to add a fresh finishing touch to soups, rice bowls, salads, and stir-fries. A short row in a raised bed or a sunny container keeps these useful kitchen greens close at hand.

Grow for scallion-style harvests rather than large storage bulbs. Harvest size and timing depend on planting density, season, and local conditions.

When to sow

Sow in spring for later harvests, or in late summer where local conditions allow a fall crop. In mild climates, additional planting windows may be suitable. Follow your area's planting calendar rather than assuming year-round performance or guaranteed winter survival.

Small successive sowings can help spread the harvest while growing conditions remain suitable.

Sowing guide

  1. Prepare a fine seedbed or fill clean modules with seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep and water gently.
  3. Keep the seedbed evenly moist during germination; do not allow the surface to repeatedly dry out.
  4. Provide good light as seedlings develop.
  5. For individual scallions, thin to approximately 1–2 inches apart, adjusting spacing to your preferred harvest size.

If transplanting, acclimate seedlings gradually to outdoor conditions and handle roots gently. Use a container deep enough for root growth and ensure excess water can drain freely.

Growing care

Water consistently to support tender growth without keeping roots saturated. Weed carefully around the shallow root system and mulch lightly around established plants, keeping material away from stems.

Feed as needed according to soil conditions and the directions on a fertilizer suitable for vegetables. Inspect regularly for pests and remove damaged foliage. Temperature stress can encourage flowering, so harvest promptly when plants reach your preferred size.

Harvesting

Pull whole plants gently when stems reach the thickness you want, loosening soil first if needed. Alternatively, snip a modest amount of green foliage while leaving the growing base and enough leaves for recovery. Regrowth depends on plant health and conditions.

Wash thoroughly, especially around the stem bases, and trim roots before preparing.

Kitchen use and storage

Use sliced stems and leaves in soups, noodle dishes, rice bowls, salads, and stir-fries. Add tender green tops near the end of cooking or use as a fresh garnish. Refrigerate harvested scallions promptly and use while firm and fresh.

Seed storage

Keep unused seeds sealed in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture and temperature extremes. Seeds supplied are for planting, not direct consumption.
