Size: Packet-50 Seeds

Brighten your vegetable patch with Rainbow Swiss chard, a mix grown for colorful stalks and generous leafy greens. Stems may include shades of red, pink, gold, yellow, and purple, bringing color to garden beds and containers as well as the kitchen. Harvest a handful of outer leaves for a quick sauté while leaving the center to keep growing.

Choose your seed size

This listing is for seeds to plant, not live plants or harvested chard. Available options are:

  • 50-seed packet
  • 100 seeds
  • 1/4 oz seeds
  • 1 oz seeds
  • 1/4 lb seeds
  • 1 lb pack

Weight-based packs are sold by weight; seed counts vary by lot. This is a color mixture, so the proportion of each stem color varies and individual plants do not produce every color.

Crop details

  • Crop: Rainbow Swiss chard mix
  • Harvested parts: Leaves and fleshy leaf stalks
  • Garden uses: Vegetable beds, raised beds, containers, and edible borders

Swiss chard is usually grown as an annual leaf crop. It is botanically a biennial and may flower after exposure to cold; this does not guarantee winter survival in every climate.

When to sow

Sow in spring once soil can be worked and conditions are suitable for germination. For a fall crop, sow in late summer with enough time for plants to establish before cold weather. Follow your local planting calendar and protect tender seedlings from weather extremes.

Established chard can tolerate light frost, but prolonged heat, drought, or severe cold can reduce leaf quality and growth.

Sowing guide

  1. Prepare a fine seedbed enriched with finished compost, or fill a well-drained container with vegetable potting mix.
  2. Sow approximately 1/2 inch deep and water gently.
  3. Keep the soil consistently moist, not saturated, while seedlings emerge.
  4. Thin plants to approximately 8–12 inches apart for repeated outer-leaf harvests.
  5. Allow enough room between rows or containers for easy picking and airflow.

Chard seed clusters can produce more than one seedling, so thin crowded groups carefully. If starting indoors, transplant young seedlings gently and acclimate them gradually to outdoor conditions.

Growing care

Water regularly to support tender leaves and avoid repeated drying of the root zone. Mulch lightly around established plants, keeping material away from the crowns, and remove weeds while they are small.

Feed according to soil needs and the directions on a fertilizer suitable for vegetables. Inspect leaf undersides and remove damaged foliage. A modest succession sowing can provide replacement plants when older plants decline.

Harvesting

Begin with young leaves when plants are well established, or let leaves grow larger for cooking. Cut outer stalks near the base with clean scissors or a knife, leaving the central growing point and enough foliage for recovery. Avoid stripping the plant bare; continued harvest depends on plant health and conditions.

Kitchen use and storage

Wash leaves and stalks thoroughly. Chop thicker stems separately and start cooking them before adding the leaves, since stems take longer to soften. Use in sautés, soups, stews, and egg dishes. Refrigerate harvested chard promptly and use while fresh.

Seed storage

Keep unused seeds sealed in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture and temperature extremes. Seeds supplied are for planting, not direct consumption.
