Allium schubertii — commonly called the Tumbleweed Onion — is one of the most visually extraordinary plants in the entire bulb world. Unlike any other allium, Schubertii produces enormous flower heads over 12 inches in diameter composed of star-shaped florets on dramatically varying stem lengths, creating an explosive, fireworks-like silhouette that looks like it belongs in a modern art installation. Growing 12–18 inches tall, it's more compact than the giant alliums but arguably more dramatic in close-up detail. The extraordinary seedheads persist for weeks and dry beautifully for long-lasting indoor arrangements. Drought tolerant, deer resistant, and a guaranteed conversation starter.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 12+ inch diameter explosion-shaped flower heads — the most dramatic allium silhouette available
  • Star-shaped florets on varying stem lengths create a fireworks or tumbleweed effect
  • Showy seedheads persist for weeks after blooming — exceptional dried flower value
  • Drought tolerant once established
  • Deer resistant
  • Compact 12–18 inch height — front-of-border drama without towering stems

Planting & Care

Plant bulbs pointed tip up in well-drained soil in fall. Fertilize with bulb food at planting. Water well after planting. After blooming, leave seedheads in place for weeks of ornamental interest, or harvest and dry for indoor floral use. Allow foliage to die back naturally. Divide congested clumps right after flowering if needed.
