Siling Labuyo – Filipino Bird’s Eye Hot Pepper

Capsicum frutescens | Annual/Short-lived Perennial | Origin: Philippines

One of the Philippines’ most iconic wild chili peppers, Siling Labuyo (meaning “wild chicken pepper” in Tagalog — named because roaming labuyo chickens were often spotted eating the ripe fruits in the wild) is a tiny powerhouse with intense piquancy. Native to the forested areas of the Philippine archipelago, particularly northern Luzon, this rare Capsicum frutescens species is classified as “very hot” with 80,000–100,000 SHU — slightly milder than a Habanero — and has become increasingly rare even in its homeland, where larger, milder Thai peppers have gradually replaced it in local markets. A prized heirloom for collectors and Filipino cuisine enthusiasts.

Safe Handling

Always wear gloves when handling seeds and fruits. Wash hands thoroughly even after removing gloves. Avoid touching eyes or sensitive areas. Lime juice applied to burning skin is said to provide relief.

Soil & Water

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter; target pH 6.0–6.8. Water consistently, allowing the top inch to dry between sessions. Mulch to retain soil warmth and moisture.

Planting & Growing Tips

  • Optional: soak seeds in room-temperature water for up to 24 hours to speed germination.
  • Start seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before the last expected frost; sow ¼ inch deep in organic seed-starting mix.
  • Maintain 80–85°F (27–29°C) soil temperature; a seedling heat mat is essential. Germination: 2–4 weeks.
  • Harden off gradually; transplant outdoors once nights stay above 55°F (13°C).
  • Container growing: 5-gallon pots or larger; thrives in warm, humid conditions.

Harvest Tips

  • Harvest at full red maturity for peak heat. Always wear gloves.
  • Use garden scissors to cut cleanly from stems; pick regularly to encourage continued production.
  • Essential for Filipino adobo, sinigang, and traditional dipping sauces. Also excellent dried and ground.
