Tender Green Oakleaf Lettuce for Fresh Salads

Green Salad Bowl lettuce forms loose rosettes of lime-green, deeply lobed leaves with a delicate texture. Grow it for young salad leaves or allow plants to develop larger rosettes for generous kitchen harvests.

Step outside to pick a handful of fresh leaves for sandwiches and mixed salads. Harvesting the outer leaves while leaving the growing center intact can extend picking while conditions remain cool and plants stay healthy.

What You Receive

  • Product: Green Salad Bowl lettuce seeds for planting, not live plants or harvested greens.
  • Pack options: 1,000 seeds, 1/4 ounce, 1 ounce, 4 ounces, or 1 pound.
  • Weight packs: Sold by weight; seed counts vary.
  • Lettuce type: Green oakleaf, loose-leaf lettuce.
  • Harvest estimates: Baby leaves may be ready around 28 days after sowing; larger rosettes around 49–60 days under favorable conditions.

Harvest timing depends on temperature, light, spacing, and desired leaf size. This is the green variety, not Red Salad Bowl or Buttercrunch.

Sowing and Establishment

Grow as a cool-season crop in fertile, well-drained soil. Sow in spring or fall according to your local climate. In mild-winter areas, a winter crop may be possible. Summer heat can reduce germination and encourage bolting.

  • Sow seeds thinly on a finely prepared surface and cover very lightly with soil.
  • Keep the seedbed consistently moist, not waterlogged, until seedlings establish.
  • Provide sun in cool weather; light afternoon shade can help in warmer conditions.
  • For larger plants, thin seedlings to approximately 6–8 inches apart, with rows approximately 12–24 inches apart.
  • Use closer spacing for young leaves, allowing enough airflow to limit overcrowding.

Sow small batches approximately every two weeks while temperatures remain suitable to spread out harvests. Lettuce seed may germinate poorly in hot soil; heat tolerance does not mean plants are immune to bitterness or bolting.

Growing Care

Lettuce has shallow roots and benefits from even moisture. Water gently near the soil, check containers frequently, and avoid letting the root zone dry out. A light mulch around established plants can help conserve moisture and reduce weeds.

Keep plants free of competing weeds and monitor for slugs and leaf-feeding pests. Follow the labels of any products used on edible crops. Containers should have drainage holes and sufficient space for the intended plant size.

Harvesting and Storage

Pick young leaves when they reach your preferred size, preferably during the cooler part of the day. Remove outer leaves individually without damaging the center, or cut a mature rosette near the soil surface. Regrowth depends on the cut, plant condition, and weather and is not guaranteed.

Harvest before plants send up tall flower stalks, when leaves can become more bitter. Rinse harvested leaves under clean running water, drain, and refrigerate promptly. Use fresh for the best texture.

Seed Storage

Keep unused seeds cool, dry, and protected from sunlight and moisture. Seeds are intended for planting, not direct consumption.
