Why Grow Waltham 29?
- Versatile harvests: Grow mature broccoli outdoors or harvest young seedlings as microgreens.
- Cool-season growing: A cold-tolerant variety suited to spring and fall gardens.
- Continued picking: Leave healthy plants in place after cutting the main head to allow smaller side shoots to develop.
- Fresh kitchen flavor: Enjoy mature broccoli in everyday meals or use mild broccoli-flavored microgreens on sandwiches and salads.

How to Grow Garden Broccoli
- Start at the right time: Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before your last spring frost, or plan a midsummer sowing for a fall crop.
- Sow: Plant seeds approximately 1/2 inch deep in fertile, well-drained soil. A soil pH of 6.0–7.0 is suitable.
- Germinate: Keep the growing medium evenly moist. Germination typically takes 3–14 days, depending on conditions.
- Space: Thin or transplant established seedlings 12–18 inches apart.
- Care: Provide full sun and consistent moisture. In warmer conditions, some afternoon shade can help protect plants from excessive heat.
Harvesting Heads & Side Shoots
Allow approximately 85–90 days from sowing, with timing varying by weather and growing conditions. Cut the main head while its buds are tight, before flowers open, at roughly 5–6 inches across. Leave the plant in place for later side-shoot harvests.
Growing Broccoli Microgreens
Sow in a clean tray of seed-starting medium and keep evenly moist, not waterlogged. Once seedlings emerge, provide good light and airflow. Harvest when the seed leaves have opened and the greens are tender, generally around 8–12 days after sowing. Cut above the growing medium using clean scissors, rinse before use, and refrigerate promptly.
Microgreen harvest timing is separate from the maturity time for full-size broccoli heads. Indoor microgreens can be grown year-round when suitable light and growing conditions are maintained.
