Growing Guide

Direct sowing (recommended): Sow outdoors 2–4 weeks after the last frost when soil has warmed above 60°F. Summer squash direct-sows easily and usually outperforms transplants.

Starting indoors (short-season climates): Sow 2–4 weeks before the last frost in individual pulp pots to avoid root disturbance at transplant time.

Harvest — the key to continuous yield: Pick regularly — this is the most important step. Harvest at 3 inches for baby zucchini; 6–8 inches for standard use. Fruits left to grow past 10–12 inches become seedy and woody — the plant reads this as "job done" and slows production. Keep them picked and they will keep coming.

Blossom harvest: Collect male and female blossoms in mid-to-late morning when fully open. Male flowers have thin stems; female flowers have thick stems with a tiny immature fruit at the base. Clip 1–2 inches below the base with scissors. Leave at least some male flowers to ensure pollination of female ones.
