Tender Yellow Wax Beans for Your Kitchen Garden

Top Notch Golden Wax bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) produce deep-yellow pods for fresh cooking, freezing, and preserving. The round, straight pods typically reach approximately 4–6 inches long and are best picked young, before the seeds become prominent.

Sow a sunny garden row and enjoy picking bright yellow beans that stand out against the foliage. Harvest regularly for tender pods, then steam, sauté, or add them to your favorite vegetable dishes.

What You Receive

  • Product: Top Notch Golden Wax bean seeds for planting, not live plants or harvested beans.
  • Options: 50 seeds, a 1/4 lb seed pack, a 1 lb seed pack, or a 5 lb seed pack.
  • Weight packs: Sold by weight, not a guaranteed seed count.
  • Botanical name: Phaseolus vulgaris.
  • Growth habit: Bush-type, frost-tender annual.
  • Pods: Yellow wax beans, approximately 4–6 inches long at suitable harvest size.
  • Uses: Cooked snap beans, freezing, and tested preservation recipes.

Direct Sowing

Sow outdoors after the last frost when soil is warmer than 60°F. Warm soil around 70–85°F supports germination; cold, wet conditions can cause poor emergence or seed rot.

  • Choose full sun and light, well-drained soil.
  • Sow approximately 1 inch deep and 2–3 inches apart.
  • Leave room between rows for airflow, weeding, and picking.
  • Water gently after sowing and maintain even moisture without saturating the seedbed.

Seedlings may emerge in approximately 4–10 days under favorable conditions, but cooler soil can delay germination. Packet size does not guarantee a particular row length or final stand.

Growing Care

Provide consistent moisture, especially during flowering and pod development. Dry conditions can reduce production and make pods more fibrous. Water near the soil when possible and avoid handling plants while foliage is wet.

Control weeds during establishment and avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of pods. Follow soil recommendations and the labels of products used on edible crops.

Where the season allows, sow additional rows approximately 3–4 weeks apart to spread out harvests. Leave enough frost-free growing time for later sowings; continuous production is not guaranteed.

Harvesting and Kitchen Use

Pick when pods are yellow, tender, and snap easily, before the seeds bulge. Check plants every 2–3 days during production. Hold the stem while picking or use clean snips to avoid breaking branches.

Wash before preparing and cook for eating. Refrigerate harvested pods and use promptly. For freezing or shelf-stable canning, follow a tested preparation and processing method suitable for beans.

Seed Storage and Safety

Store unused seed in a cool, dry place protected from moisture. Seeds are sold for planting, not direct consumption or sprouting for food. Do not eat raw or undercooked mature beans.
