The Legendary Herb of Absinthe — Ancient Medicine, Bold Garden Beauty

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is one of the most historically significant and medicinally potent herbs in the world — the primary botanical ingredient in Absinthe, the spirit favored by Vincent van Gogh and Ernest Hemingway, and a medicinal plant with documented use stretching back to ancient Egypt. With its stunning silvery-gray, finely-divided foliage and abundant yellow flowers, Wormwood is as ornamentally striking as it is medicinally valuable. Organic, Non-GMO, untreated seeds.

Why Grow Wormwood?

  • Legendary Medicinal Herb: Used since ancient Egypt to expel intestinal worms and parasites, promote healthy digestion, reduce fever, and treat liver ailments. Active compound thujone has well-documented biological activity.
  • Natural Moth Repellent & Garden Pesticide: Aromatic foliage acts as a powerful natural insect deterrent — bundle dried stems for closets or scatter in the garden to deter pests.
  • Stunning Ornamental Foliage: Finely cut, silver-gray leaves create a beautiful textural contrast in borders, herb gardens, and cottage gardens. Yellow button flowers appear in midsummer.
  • Historic Absinthe Connection: The botanical base of one of history’s most famous spirits — a genuinely fascinating ethnobotanical heritage plant.
  • Hardy Perennial: Returns year after year in USDA Zones 3–8. Thrives in poor, sandy, well-drained soil with minimal care.

Growing Guide

Start seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Surface sow — do not cover seeds; press lightly into soil. Place tray under plastic in a bright, indirect-light location to retain moisture. Harden seedlings for 10–14 days before transplanting. Harvest in midsummer when plants are in full flower; tie stalks and hang upside down in a dark, well-ventilated space to dry. Store in airtight containers in a dark place. USDA Zones 3–8. Height: 24–36 inches.
