Lobelia erinus 'Mrs. Clibran' is a free-flowering, compact lobelia producing brilliant dark blue flowers with distinctive white eyes all summer through the first frost. A showy and dependable edging plant and an outstanding choice for window boxes, hanging baskets, and mass groundcover plantings. In mild, frost-free areas it may overwinter and persist as a perennial groundcover. Once established in moist, rich soil, it self-sows reliably. Deer resistant.

Plant Highlights

  • Brilliant dark blue flowers with white eyes — blooms all summer until first frost
  • Compact, leafy, branching habit — excellent edging, container, and window box plant
  • Self-sows once established; may overwinter in frost-free zones
  • Deer resistant; attracts pollinators
  • Approx. 5,000 seeds covers 100 sq ft

Growing Guide

Starting indoors (recommended): Sow 10–12 weeks before the last frost for the earliest flowers. Seeds are very small — press onto the surface of finely prepared, moist soil without covering; seeds need light to germinate. Keep at 72°F; germination in 14–21 days.

Transplanting: Set out after all frost danger has passed; space 6 inches apart. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage continued branching and blooming.

Direct sowing: Direct-sown seed outdoors will begin flowering approximately 2 months after planting.

Site & soil: Full sun to partial shade; well-drained soil, pH 5.5–6.5. Prefers consistently moist, rich soil. Deep, regular watering is ideal — do not allow to completely dry out.
