Bring delicate texture to a shaded garden with foamflower, Tiarella wherryi. Airy clusters of white to pale pink flowers rise above attractive foliage, adding a soft woodland look to borders and planting groups. Pair it with other shade-loving perennials in a cool, sheltered spot with rich soil.

Cold Treatment and Sowing

The supplied growing directions recommend 4–6 weeks of moist cold treatment before sowing. Place seeds with a lightly moistened paper towel in a sealed bag in the refrigerator, not the freezer. Check periodically and avoid excess water or mold.

After cold treatment, surface sow on a clean seed-starting mix. Gently press seeds into contact with the surface without covering them, as light is required. Maintain approximately 70°F and keep the surface evenly moist, not saturated. Gentle bottom watering can help avoid displacing the seeds.

Germination and Transplanting

The supplied estimate is approximately 21–28 days after sowing, but germination can be uneven and may take longer. Allow seedlings to develop before handling. Harden them off gradually and transplant once frost danger has passed.

Space plants approximately 12 inches apart in a prepared shaded bed. Water gently after planting and keep moisture consistent while roots establish.

Soil and Ongoing Care

Choose humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Keep the root zone evenly moist, especially in dry weather, without leaving it waterlogged. Avoid hot, exposed locations and prolonged drying.

The existing variety information lists USDA zones 4–8 as a growing guide; suitability also depends on drainage, summer heat, and local conditions. Do not rely on guaranteed deer resistance or evergreen foliage.
