Planting

Prepare fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny location. Direct sow after the last frost when soil is reliably warm, approximately 70°F or warmer. Keep the seedbed moist without saturating it.

For hill planting, make a low mound approximately 1 foot across and 3–4 inches high. Space mounds approximately 4–8 feet apart and sow 1–2 seeds per mound, allowing room for spreading vines.

Growing and Care

Water consistently during establishment and fruit development. Direct water toward the root zone where practical and avoid leaving roots in waterlogged soil. Feed according to soil needs and fertilizer directions. Allow pollinating insects access to flowers for fruit set.

Harvest and Storage

Allow fruits to mature on the vine until the rind is hard and their mature coloring has developed. Cut with a short section of stem attached and handle carefully to avoid damage. Harvest before damaging frost.

Cure sound, mature fruit in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place protected from rain and excessive heat, then store under suitable dry conditions. Check stored fruits regularly and use any damaged fruits promptly.

Kitchen Uses

Use harvested flesh in soups, stews, roasted dishes, pumpkin pie, or Mexican candied pumpkin. Adjust cooking times and moisture to suit the fruit. Do not eat the planting seeds supplied in this packet.
