Starting from seed
Start indoors 10–12 weeks before your expected last frost. Sow approximately ¼ inch deep in a clean seed-starting mix. Keep the mix evenly moist without waterlogging and maintain consistent warmth around 80–85°F. A heat mat can help maintain that temperature. Germination may take 1–4 weeks, with some seeds taking longer.
Provide bright light after emergence. Gradually harden seedlings off over 7–14 days before transplanting outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil and nighttime temperatures are reliably warm.
Growing and care
Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. For containers, use a pot of approximately 5 gallons with drainage holes. Water consistently, adjusting for rainfall, heat and container size rather than following a fixed watering schedule.
Mulch around plants to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from stems. Feed according to the directions on a fertilizer suitable for peppers. Protect plants from cold; year-round production depends on suitable warmth and light.
Harvesting
Allow pods to reach their bright yellow mature color before harvesting. Cut fruit from the plant with garden scissors rather than pulling on branches, and pick regularly as pods ripen.
Culinary uses
Use in Caribbean green seasoning, sofrito, marinades, sauces, soups, rice and bean dishes. Chop into fresh salsas or blend with herbs and aromatics for a fragrant seasoning base. Begin with a small quantity and adjust to taste.
