Root established in 2-1/2" square plastic pots, Pink to lavender with deep red stamens
Hagley Hybrid is a robust and dependable grower, with attractive flowers that are highly appealing to pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds. With large flowers up to 6” in size, its deep red stamens provide a gorgeous contrast to its pink blossoms with a hint of lavender. ‘Hagley Hybrid’ pairs well with small shrubs and perennials, which in turn help keep its roots cool and moist. This clematis may be trained to climb walls, fences, and arbors, or grow in containers to enjoy in the patio garden!
The Clematis performs best when sufficient moisture is given and the base of the plant is kept cool. Plant in a sunny location but cover the root zone with mulch or stone. Prune the first spring after planting to 6-12″ from the ground.
Clematis is a diverse genus of plants with over 250 species found in various regions including Europe, the Himalayas, China, Australia, and North and Central America. They are primarily woody or semi-woody vines that can climb or trail over support, with some growing as shrubs. Their flowers are typically flat, cupped, or bell-shaped and some plants have ornamental fluffy seed heads in autumn. They also have opposite leaves, which can range from simple to compound.
Planting Instructions: Choose a site with moist well-drained soil, such as a clay or loam soil, in part shade. This clematis will tolerate sun, but its best color is obtained in part shade. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly. Plant in the spring when the soil is workable. Be sure to keep the roots cool and shaded. Prune in late winter or early spring.
