Petunia nana compacta 'Purple Velvet' is a showstopping trailing basket petunia — vigorous, free-blooming, and consistently outperforming more expensive vegetatively propagated varieties. Cascading stems reach up to 3 feet (1 m) in length and are smothered in rich, velvety deep purple blooms from planting until the first frosts. Outstanding in hanging baskets and containers; also highly effective as colorful groundcover in borders. 100 seeds per packet.

Plant Highlights

  • Rich, velvety deep purple blooms covering cascading stems to 3 feet long
  • Blooms continuously from planting until frost
  • Outperforms cutting-raised Surfinia petunias from seed
  • Excellent in hanging baskets, containers, and as border groundcover
  • A stunning focal point in any container combination

Growing Guide

Starting indoors (strongly recommended): Sow approximately 10 weeks before transplanting outdoors (after last frost). Press seeds onto the soil surface — do not cover; seeds need light to germinate. Keep at 70–80°F (21–27°C); germination takes 1–3 weeks. Space transplants 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) apart.

Direct sowing: Sow on the soil surface after the last frost of spring in a sunny to partially shaded location with moist, organically rich soil, pH 6.0–7.5.

Site and soil: Full sun to partial shade; moist, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Regular feeding through the season maximizes bloom performance and stem length.
