Red Iochroma Seeds – Iochroma fuchsioides

Also known as: Red Iochroma, Fuchsia-flowered Iochroma, Andean Trumpet Shrub

If you’ve ever wanted a plant that stops people in their tracks, Iochroma fuchsioides is it. A rare gem from the cloud forests of the Andes — native to Colombia through Argentina at elevations of 800–3,500 m — this spectacular shrub produces cascading clusters of fiery red, long tubular flowers that flare 5–6 inches wide at the tips. A close cousin of the Angel Trumpet (Brugmansia), it blooms prolifically from late spring through fall, drawing hummingbirds and butterflies in droves.

Bushy and spreading, growing to about 4 ft. tall and wide, it’s perfectly suited to warm temperate gardens, patios, and large containers. Hardy in USDA Zones 9–11, it thrives where summers aren’t blistering and winters stay frost-free.

How to Germinate

Step 1 – Prepare containers: Use small pots or cups with drainage holes. Fill with a well-draining mix — 2 parts potting soil to 1 part perlite or coarse sand works well. Alternatively, use equal parts coir fiber and perlite with slow-release fertilizer added. Water the mix before sowing.

Step 2 – Sow seeds: Place 1–2 seeds on the surface of the moist soil. Lightly mist the top to settle seeds into the soil. Do not bury deeply — light aids germination.

Step 3 – Maintain humidity: Cover pots with a plastic dome or bag, leaving a small gap for airflow. Keep the soil surface consistently moist — mist daily if needed. Aim for near 100% humidity until sprouts appear.

Step 4 – Germination: Expect seedlings in 21–60 days at around 60°F (15°C). Once sprouted, gradually reduce humidity and grow on in bright light. Space plants 18–24 inches apart when transplanting outdoors.
