Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena asphodeloides), commonly known as 知母, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to East Asia with over 2,000 years of use in traditional Chinese medicine. This heirloom medicinal herb resembles tall grass but produces fragrant yellow-white or light purple flowers that open in the evening during late summer and autumn.

Key Features:

  • Perennial medicinal herb with 2,000+ years of traditional use
  • Hardy in zones 2-7
  • Spreads by underground rhizomes
  • Fragrant evening-blooming flowers in late summer and autumn
  • Rhizomes valued for antidiabetic and antibacterial properties
  • Non-GMO, open-pollinated heirloom
  • Easy germination

Traditional Uses:

The rhizomes are traditionally used in Chinese medicine for pneumonia, bronchitis, high fever, irritability, and insomnia. Noted for their antidiabetic and antibacterial properties.

Growing Conditions:

  • Duration: Perennial (hardy zones 2-7)
  • Sun: Full sun (5+ hours direct sunlight or 12-16 hours fluorescent light)
  • Spacing: 8-12" between plants, rows 12-36" apart
  • Growth habit: Grass-like appearance with rhizomatous spread

Planting Guide:

Indoor Starting: Sow thinly in sterilized soil mix. Cover seeds with soil twice the seed thickness, press firmly, and water. Keep evenly moist (not soggy). Expose seedlings to direct light. Transplant to pots when large enough to handle.

Outdoor Planting: Start indoors and transplant after danger of frost has passed, or direct sow in rows 12-36" apart. Cover seeds three times their thickness with soil, press firmly, and water. Keep evenly moist. Thin seedlings to 8-12" apart.

Care: Maintain even moisture throughout the growing season. Most sun-loving herbs require at least 5 hours of direct sunlight daily or 12-16 hours of fluorescent light for indoor growing.

Harvest: Rhizomes are harvested for medicinal use. Flowers bloom in evening during late summer and autumn, adding ornamental value to the garden.

Garden Notes: While Zhi Mu grows like tall grass and spreads via rhizomes, it is not a true grass. The fragrant evening flowers and traditional medicinal value make this an interesting addition to herb gardens and medicinal plant collections.
