The Alison Bradley tulip is an early double variety celebrated for its rich, peony-style flowers displaying deep reddish-purple hues. The bulbs are planted in the fall for flowers in early to mid-spring. Peony shaped flowers that will look great in any garden border or patio containers.

  • Color: The flowers are a rich, vibrant shade of deep purplish-red or wine-red. Some growers describe the color as a deep maroon that turns claret in the sunlight.
  • Appearance: Its double-layered petals give the flower a full, opulent look that resembles a peony blossom. Each strong, sturdy stem often produces multiple blooms.
  • Uses: It is popular for both garden borders and cut-flower arrangements because of its striking color and long-lasting vase life.

Planting & Growing Instructions

Plant bulbs in well dug soil about 8-10cm deep and approx 15cm apart. It is often beneficial to use a little bonemeal or super phosphate mixed in with the soil. Tulips delight during their growth in a sunny location.

Cultural Instructions

After the tulips have bloomed and when leaves fade and turn brown the bulbs can be lifted, dried, cleaned and stored in a cool place until planting time. Tulips should not be grown in the same soil for several years, so replace with fresh soil every other year.

Location:
Find a location with full sun. Soil should be well drained. Adding compost right before planting will help with drainage.
Depth and Spacing:
Plant large bulbs 8-10" deep and smaller bulbs 5-6" deep. Space 4-6" apart.
When:
Plant in fall. After planting, water well to settle the soil around the bulbs. Roots will form in the fall. A few sprouts may also develop in autumn if you live in a warm region. More substantial top growth and flower stems will form in the spring.
Watering:
Water in fall to help good root growth before ground freezes. Do not water in excess during summer when bulb is dormant.
Care:
Use low nitrogen fertilizer in fall and spring. After blooming leave foliage and water weekly. This will help with root growth. When leaves turn yellow and die back foliage may be removed. Placing mulch over plant during winter will help keep plant dormant and protected.
Cut Flowers:
Tulips make excellent cut flowers. Cut as many as needed and bring indoors to enjoy their beauty and scent.
