Plant Details
- Botanical name: Moluccella laevis
- Common names: Bells of Ireland and shellflower
- Plant type: Annual flower
- Color: Green calyces with small white flowers
- Light: Full sun
- Best uses: Cutting gardens, mixed borders, fresh bouquets, and dried arrangements
Starting the Seeds
A period of cool, moist conditions before sowing may support more even germination. Sow in a moist, well-drained seed-starting mix and press the seeds gently into the surface. Cover only lightly, because light can support germination. Keep evenly moist without waterlogging and provide airflow.
Transplanting and Care
After seedlings develop, provide strong light and move them into individual containers if needed. Harden indoor-grown plants gradually before transplanting outdoors after severe frost danger has passed. Choose well-drained soil and space plants to allow airflow. Taller stems may benefit from support in windy sites.
Cutting and Drying
For fresh arrangements, cut stems when several green bells have developed and the spike is well formed. Place stems promptly in clean water. For dried arrangements, harvest before the calyces become weathered, remove excess foliage, and hang small bundles upside down in a dry, shaded place with good airflow.
Choose packages of 20, 50, or 200 seeds, or bulk packages of 1/4 ounce or 1 ounce.
