Grow Kentucky Wonder Wax on a Garden Trellis

Kentucky Wonder Wax is listed as a pole bean, making it a choice for gardeners who want to grow climbing beans on sturdy support. Harvest the pods young for tender cooked beans and enjoy a garden-to-table crop for summer side dishes.

Product details

  • Variety: Kentucky Wonder Wax
  • Type: Pole bean
  • Growth habit: Climbing vines requiring a trellis, poles, or netting
  • Harvest: Young pods for cooked snap beans
  • Product supplied: Seeds for planting, not live plants

Planting your seeds

Direct sow after frost risk has passed and the soil is warm. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-draining soil. Sow approximately 1 inch deep and 3–6 inches apart along your support. Install sturdy climbing support at planting so the developing vines have something to climb.

Growing and care

Keep soil evenly moist during germination and establishment without waterlogging. Water near the soil surface and adjust for rainfall and heat. Mulch around established plants to help retain moisture and keep weeds under control while the vines are young. Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding, which can favor leafy growth over pod production.

Harvest for tender beans

Check vines frequently and harvest pods while young, before the beans inside become prominent. Hold the vine gently while picking, or snip the stems to avoid damaging the plant. Growing conditions affect harvest timing.

From garden to kitchen

Cook harvested beans before eating. Steam or simmer tender pods for side dishes, or blanch and freeze them using reliable food-preservation instructions. These seeds are supplied for planting, not ready-to-eat food.
