Allium stellatum — Prairie Onion, Autumn Onion, or Cliff Onion — is a native North American perennial allium prized for its upright, solid stem and late-season pink blooms that appear in late summer when most other wildflowers have finished. Similar to Nodding Onion but more upright in stature, it is perfectly suited to rock gardens, dry-mesic areas, rock outcroppings, and naturalized prairie plantings. Deer and rabbit resistant. Edible, as with most Allium species. A reliable pollinator magnet for late-summer beneficial insects. USDA Zones 3–9.

Plant Highlights

  • Pink blooms in late summer — valuable late-season pollinator plant for bees and beneficial insects
  • Native North American species — excellent for prairie, rock garden, and naturalized plantings
  • Upright, solid stem distinguishes it from the related Nodding Onion
  • Deer and rabbit resistant
  • Edible plant — most Allium species are edible
  • Suited to dry-mesic and rocky conditions; easy to grow once established
  • Height: 12–18 inches | USDA Zones 3–9

Sowing Guide

Note on timing: Prairie Onion is easy to grow from seed but may take several years to produce a flowering plant. For faster results, consider purchasing a few established plants alongside seed and dividing annually — they respond very well to yearly bulb divisions.

Depth: 1/8 inch deep.

Light: Light required for germination — do not bury deeply.

Germination: 56–70 days at 64–72°F. Keep consistently moist until germination occurs.

Spacing: 12 inches apart. Sowing rate: 6 seeds per plant.

Care Guide

Light: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained; pH 6.6–7.5. Tolerates dry to dry-mesic conditions; excellent in rocky or gravelly soils.

Maintenance: Very low maintenance once established. Divide bulbs annually to increase stock and encourage flowering.
