When the world is still grey and frozen, the Snowdrop arrives. Galanthus woronowii — the giant green snowdrop — is one of winter’s most quietly spectacular gifts: elegant nodding white bells with distinctive green markings, pushing through the cold earth as early as February. A true perennial heirloom, it returns faithfully year after year, naturalizing into ever-expanding drifts of beauty.

Planting Guide

When & Where to Plant

  • Plant bulbs in autumn for late winter and early spring flowering
  • Best sited in partial to full shade — thrives under deciduous trees, in woodland, or along shaded borders
  • Will survive in full sun but will not naturalize or increase well without some shade and moisture
  • Prefers moist but well-drained soil — performs well in most soil types including woodland loam
  • Perfect for rock gardens, woodland edges, grass, and containers in a cool room or cold greenhouse

How to Plant

  • Plant bulbs at least 5cm (2") deep and 5cm (2") apart
  • For a naturalized effect, scatter bulbs loosely and plant where they fall
  • In containers: use free-draining compost and keep in a cold room or unheated greenhouse

Forcing Indoors for Winter Blooms

  • Plant bulbs in pots and place in a cool, dark location for 8–12 weeks
  • Once shoots emerge, move to a bright, cool room to enjoy blooms weeks ahead of the garden
  • Do not expose to high heat — snowdrops prefer cool conditions throughout

Care & Maintenance

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry autumn and spring spells
  • Feeding: Top-dress with well-rotted leaf mould or compost after flowering to enrich soil
  • Dividing: Lift and divide clumps every few years ‘in the green’ (just after flowering) to spread them further across the garden
  • Minimal maintenance — once established, snowdrops largely care for themselves

The first whisper of spring. Plant them once and they’ll reward you with expanding drifts of white beauty for decades to come.
