Bigroot Geranium (Geranium macrorrhizum) is a versatile and vigorous perennial groundcover that brings beauty and function to shaded gardens. This hardy geranium produces masses of delicate pink to magenta flowers in late spring to early summer, rising above aromatic, semi-evergreen foliage that turns brilliant shades of red and orange in fall.

10 SEEDS

Growing 12-18 inches tall and spreading readily through thick rhizomes, Bigroot Geranium creates a dense, weed-suppressing carpet perfect for challenging garden spots. The fragrant leaves release a pleasant scent when brushed or crushed, and the plant thrives in dry shade where many others struggle. This low-maintenance perennial is deer-resistant, drought-tolerant once established, and provides year-round interest with its attractive foliage and stunning fall color.

How to Germinate Bigroot Geranium Seeds:

Geranium macrorrhizum seeds benefit from cold stratification for best germination rates:

  1. Cold Stratification: Mix seeds with moist sand or vermiculite in a sealed plastic bag. Refrigerate at 35-40°F for 4-6 weeks to break dormancy.
  2. Sowing: After stratification, sow seeds on the surface of well-draining seed starting mix. Lightly cover with a thin layer of vermiculite or fine soil (about 1/8 inch).
  3. Temperature: Maintain soil temperature at 65-70°F for optimal germination.
  4. Moisture: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mist regularly to maintain even moisture without saturating the medium.
  5. Germination Time: Seeds typically germinate in 2-4 weeks after stratification, though some may take longer.
  6. Transplanting: Once seedlings develop 2-3 true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, transplant to individual pots.
  7. Growing On: Grow seedlings in bright indirect light. Gradually acclimate to outdoor conditions before planting out.

Planting Tips: Plant in partial to full shade in well-draining soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types once established. Ideal for USDA zones 3-8. Space 12-18 inches apart for groundcover effect. May bloom in the first or second year from seed. Spreads readily to form attractive colonies.
