How to Cultivate Red Russian Kale Seeds
Kale is a versatile and resilient crop that can be sown in early spring or late fall. For optimal growth, start indoors 3-4 weeks before the last spring frost or 6-8 weeks before the first autumn frost. Plant 3-4 seeds per cell, 1/4 inch deep, and 3-4 inches apart in well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5. Germination occurs within 3-10 days and thinning out should be done to ensure the best starts. For best results, fertilize every 4 weeks. High temperatures in the summer can cause plants to bolt and become bitter.
Non-GMO Red Russian Kale seeds can be grown in all grow zones, with full or partial sun. Directly sow the seeds one fourth of an inch deep in moist, rich soil, with a pH level between 6.5 and 6.8. Space the seeds eighteen to twenty four inches apart, with two feet between rows. While growing, the soil must be kept moist, but care must be taken to not over water the plants. The outer leaves can be harvested sixty days after sowing. Continuous harvesting is possible if the bud is kept intact.
Kale Seeds for All Growing Stages
Kale is a popular and hardy vegetable that offers many health benefits and comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. It can be grown easily and is tolerant of extreme temperatures, even overwintering in some climates. Frost enhances the flavor of Red Russian Kale, making it a great choice for a fall harvest.
Harvest Red Russian Kale.
Kale can be harvested after 60 days. Continuously harvesting outer leaves encourages growth. Trim any yellowing leaves at the base and protect from the cold for a winter harvest. Clip outer leaves every few weeks with the center bud intact for continuous harvesting. Harvesting correctly allows for more crop from the same plant.
