Extra Long Luffa Gourd – Angled Luffa / Si Gua (Luffa acutangula)

The Extra Long Luffa Gourd, known as Si Gua in China and Hechima in Japan, is a remarkable dual-purpose heirloom plant — a prolific Asian vegetable when harvested young, and a natural luffa sponge when allowed to fully dry on the vine. Slender, ribbed fruits grow to an impressive 33 inches long and up to 1 pound, with vibrant green skin and a delicate, mild flavor when eaten fresh. A single vine can produce up to 15 gourds, making it one of the most productive vining vegetables for warm-climate gardens.

Consumed across South, Southeast, and East Asia as a beloved summer vegetable in stir-fries, soups, and stews — and equally valued in the home for its natural loofah sponge potential. Train it up a trellis and it becomes a breathtakingly productive garden feature.

Growing Instructions

  • Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours or lightly scarify before planting to improve germination.
  • Plant on 1-ft. diameter mounds spaced 4–6' apart after last frost in a warm, sunny location.
  • Keep soil consistently moist; fertilize regularly. Hand pollination may improve fruit set.
  • Train vines to climb a vertical trellis for straighter fruit, better air circulation, and easier harvesting.

Harvesting

  • For eating: Harvest when gourds are vibrant green, firm, and young — before the flesh toughens.
  • For luffa sponges: Allow gourds to hang until the skin turns brown and dries completely. Remove outer skin, extract seeds, and rinse the fibrous interior — your natural loofah sponge is ready.
