Size: 30 seeds

Grow crisp, sweet snow peas on a trellis with Mammoth Melting Sugar. This heirloom climbing variety produces long, flat edible pods that are delicious picked young for stir-fries, salads, and quick spring meals. The vigorous vines bring a generous harvest to a cool-season garden.

Variety at a glance

  • Botanical name: Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon
  • Type: Snow pea with edible flat pods
  • Vines: Approximately 4–6 feet tall; provide a trellis or netting
  • Pods: Approximately 4–5 inches long, flat and tender when picked young
  • Time to harvest: Approximately 70 days
  • Available sizes: 30 seeds, 1 oz, 4 oz, and 1 lb

Planting and care

Direct sow in early spring while conditions are cool, about 4–6 weeks before the last frost, or sow in fall where the season allows. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 2–4 inches apart in well-drained soil. Give rows room for a trellis, and install support when you plant so the vines have something to climb. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; peas perform best before summer heat sets in.

Harvest and use

Pick pods while they are still flat, before the peas inside swell. Check the vines often and harvest gently to encourage continued production. Toss whole pods into a quick garlic-and-ginger stir-fry, briefly blanch them for pasta, or slice them raw into a salad for a sweet crunch. The whole young pod is edible.
