Viola tricolor — Johnny Jump-Up — is a delightful, free-spirited wildflower native to the mountains of Spain and France that has naturalized in temperate regions across the world. Also known as Wild Pansy and Heartsease, this centuries-old cottage garden favorite produces a continuous succession of charming, tri-colored blooms in purple, yellow, and white — like tiny, jaunty pansy faces — on 3–6 inch clumps of heart-shaped leaves. Once established, Johnny Jump-Up self-sows with enthusiasm but never invasively, returning year after year to brighten borders, paths, and garden beds. A cool-season performer with a long historical presence in both ornamental and herb gardens — Wild Pansy was traditionally used in herbal remedies for skin conditions.
Approx. 405,000 seeds per pound.

Growing Guide
Direct sowing: Sow directly outdoors in early spring or fall. Seeds are tiny — do not cover with more than 1/16 inch of soil. Thin seedlings to 6 inches apart. Germination in 14–21 days at 65–75°F.
Site & soil: Full sun to full shade depending on climate. In southern climates, shade is preferable in summer; in northern zones, sun works well through spring. Prefers moist, rich soil but adapts to many soil types (pH 5.8–6.8).
Ongoing care: Trim plants back in peak summer heat to encourage a strong flush of fall blooms. Allow some plants to set seed for naturalized self-sowing.
