Black Valentine is a legendary heirloom bean variety with a dual-purpose. Harvest pods early for a sweet, nutty-flavored snap bean, or later for a beautiful glossy black bean.
The prolific, bush type plants will provide you with early yields and terrific flavor.

Plant your seeds in the spring after the last chance of frost, one inch deep in full sun and in rich, well-drained soil. Heirloom beans like soil that is slightly acidic, with a pH of about 6.5. Plant two seeds every 4-6 inches. When plants are about one inch tall, thin to one plant every 4-6 inches. Rows should be spaced 2 to 3 feet apart. If planted in a 4 foot wide bed, sow two rows that are 18 inches apart.
Keep soil moist but not soggy, and avoid watering the foliage. Beans produce their own nitrogen, and fertilizer is not needed if planted in rich soil.
Harvest is 50 days for the snap stage, and 70 days for the dry bean stage. The rounded, green pods are crisp and stringless, growing to approximately 6" in length with black seeds. Harvest the pods frequently for increased yields. For a continuous harvest, sow new plants every 7-14 days up to 70 days before first fall frost.
This old heirloom bean tracks its heritage to pre-1850 and was introduced by Peter Henderson in 1897.

Vegetable Planting: Direct sow outside after danger of last frost. Plant about 4” apart and 1“ below soil surface. Rows should be spaced at 24”-30” apart.

Vegetable Seed Saving: Allow bean pods to dry on plant; then break them open to collect the large bean seeds. Clean and dry the seeds before storage in cool dry conditions.
