The Manipur Lily (Lilium mackliniae 'Naga form') is an exceptionally rare and exquisite Himalayan lily species, endemic to the Manipur region of Northeast India. This endangered treasure produces delicate, bell-shaped flowers in soft pink to purplish-pink hues that gracefully nod on slender stems, creating an ethereal display in late spring to early summer.

Named after Jean Macklin, wife of plant hunter Frank Kingdon-Ward who discovered it in 1946, this alpine lily is a prized collector's specimen. The Manipur Lily brings a touch of Himalayan mystique to rock gardens, alpine houses, and specialized woodland settings.

How to Germinate Manipur Lily Seeds:

Manipur Lily seeds require specific conditions to germinate successfully. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Cold Stratification: Mix fresh seeds with moist peat or vermiculite in a sealed bag. Refrigerate at 35-40°F for 60-90 days to simulate winter dormancy.
  2. Sowing: After stratification, sow seeds on the surface of well-draining, acidic seed mix (pH 5.5-6.5). Do not cover—seeds need light to germinate.
  3. Temperature: Maintain cool temperatures of 55-65°F. Avoid heat—this is an alpine species.
  4. Moisture: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Mist regularly to maintain humidity without saturating.
  5. Germination Time: Germination can be slow and erratic, taking 4-8 weeks or longer. Be patient.
  6. Growing On: Once seedlings emerge, provide bright indirect light and cool conditions. Transplant carefully when large enough to handle.
  7. First Year Care: Grow in pots for 1-2 seasons before planting out. Protect from extreme heat and provide winter chill.

Planting Tips: Plant in humus-rich, acidic, well-draining soil in partial shade. Requires cool summers and cold winters. May take 3-4 years to bloom from seed. Ideal for USDA zones 5-7 with cool, moist conditions.
