DESCRIPTION:
This Daikon radish variety has large, mild, white roots that grow up to 18" long and 2" in diameter. They are perfect for eating raw, cooking, or pickling. Best planted in late summer for a fall crop, but can also be planted in spring in regions below 40 degrees latitude. Ideal for breaking up compacted soil and can be planted alongside garlic and leeks. All parts of this plant are edible.
Also known as daikon, this giant white radish grows up to 2 feet long. White and crisp, with a mild sweet flavor, this Japanese radish is both unusual and delicious. Ready to harvest in as few as 45 days, these roots can be stored for weeks.
Daikon Radishes look like carrots growing to lengths of 18 to 24 inches. Deer eat both the green top and the radish itself.
Use the radishes as a nurse crop as they are excellent in this food plot role as they add high nutrient organic matter to soil such as nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, boron and sulfur as they die off in the winter and decompose rapidly.
Benefits Of Daikon Radishes in Food Plots

Planting
WHEN TO PLANT: late summer/fall Start as early as ground can be worked. Plant seeds 6" apart or broadcast carefully, covering with ¼" of fine soil firmly pressed down. They will mature in 8-12 weeks. Be sure to keep growing continuously and harvest when crowns are 1" or more in diameter. Daikons will not do well under drought conditions. Stagger planting for continuous harvest. Roots may grow over 1' long. Harvest when crowns are 1" or more in diameter. Carfully remove them with a fork - as radishes are brittle. Cut tops 2" above the crowns, wash and refrigerate. Ideally store the roots at 32F and 95% humidity where they can be stored for 6-10 weeks. |
Growing Organic Daikon Radish Cover Crop Garden Seeds
Organic Daikon radish seeds are a fast-maturing, open-pollinated crop often sown every 2 weeks and can be planted in full sun in average, looamy, and well-drained soil. They germinate in 3-7 days and require no thinning. This cool-hardy crop can be used as an annual cover crop, and can be mowed multiple times throughout the season for companion plantings.
Organic Daikon Radish Benefits
The Organic Daikon radish has a longer taproot that breaks apart and loosens dense, uncultivated soils. Its 10" taproot also helps with nutrient retention and creates optimal conditions for future crops. As a companion plant, it replenishes lost nitrogen in the soil for nitrogen-dependent crops like tomatoes, peppers, muskmelons, and cucumbers. This non-GMO variety is perfect for pickling with its tangy and crunchy taste.
