The Cold Hardy Prickly Pear is a low growing cactus with a reclining and creeping growth habit! The plant is made up of flat, fleshy pads covered with minute barbs, and pretty, bright blossoms. The edible red fruit which follows the flower may be eaten raw or in jellies! Fleshy pads are also edible if peeled, and the seeds have also been ground and many parts of the plant have been used medicinally. Loves full sun and well-drained soils
Opuntia humifusa (Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus) blooms from June to July with large bright yellow flowers two to three inches wide, sometimes with peach-colored centers. The stems and pads of Opuntia humifusa are flat and covered with clusters of short, very sharp bristles. Always wear thick gloves if/when you need to work around these plants! The barrel-shaped, edible fruits turn reddish purple as they ripen.
For winter survival, the pads dry up to the point of appearing dead before revival in spring.
