(Saxifraga Sempervivum ) This is a splendid plant for the rockery (it would make a fine, neat pot plant as well), forming densely arranged rosettes of fleshy, reddish-green leaves, the tips of which are connected cobweb fashion with fine white hairs, and bearing bright rose-red flowers in summer.

Striking, reddish, hairy stems hold clusters of nodding, bright purplish-red flowers above rosettes of grey-green, lime-encrusted leaves which in time produce impressive hummocks. Best grown in an alpine house or in a scree or rock garden, this lovely gem is found throughout the mountains of Balkans and Turkey.
SOWING ADVICE: Seeds can be sown at any time but are best sown in winter or early spring to benefit from a cold spell in the wet compost to break their dormancy. We advise covering seeds very thinly with sand or fine grit to about the depth of the seed size. If the seeds do not come up within 6 to 12 weeks the damp seed tray can be given cold treatment in a fridge for about four weeks. They may still take very many months to appear, so please never discard the pot or tray.
Grow Sempervivum succulent plants in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil. In the South, Sempervivum Hens and Chicks can profit from partial shade. The rosettes die after flowering but are replaced by new rosettes on lateral runners. Sempervivum is an old-time favorite used in concrete planters on either side of the front entry or as a great ground cover plant. Great in window boxes or niches. It needs little water or attention to thrive.
How To Grow Hens And Chicks From Seed: Sow Hens and Chicks ground cover seeds indoors in peat pots. Use a well-draining starter mix and press the Sempervivum seeds into the mix. Cover the seed very lightly with peat moss as the Hens and Chicks seeds need light to germinate. Keep seeds moist but not wet. If germination does not occur within 3 weeks, seal peat pots inside a zip-lock bag with plenty of air and refrigerate for 1 - 2 weeks. Following the cold treatment, place the pots back in 70 - 75F temperatures. A cold treatment is not usually needed, but sometimes the Sempervivum seeds need the treatment to break
