Yomogi – Japanese Mugwort (Artemisia princeps)
Yomogi is Japan’s most beloved wild herb — a perennial mugwort with deeply aromatic, green leaves (whitish underneath) that holds a revered place in both Japanese culinary tradition and folk medicine. Most famous as the key ingredient in kusa mochi (Japanese mugwort rice cakes) and yomogi mochi dumplings, Yomogi’s young spring leaves are lightly boiled and pounded into sweet mochi rice, giving them their signature earthy green color and distinctive herbal fragrance. In Taiwan, the leaves are stir-fried or added to soups. Medicinally, it has been used for centuries to boost energy and soothe stomach ailments.
Easy to grow, perennial in Zones 4–10, and ready to harvest in just 45 days. A living herb garden staple once established.
