Organic Beet, Golden Detroit Heirloom, Ideal for Pickling. This variety is ready in just 60 days, and its round orange roots maintain their golden color when cooked without any bleeding. With fast growth and a sweet, tender, and mild taste even when large, it's a great choice for pickling.
Beets are tasty root vegetables grown for their roots and leaves. They are related to Swiss chard and spinach and have a variety of shapes and colors. Use the leaves for salads! Seeds per Ounce: 1,500

Planting, Growing, and Harvesting:

Sowing: For optimal growth, directly sow golden beet seeds 4 weeks before the last expected frost. To prepare the seeds, soak them in water for 2 hours before planting in well-drained, full sun soil. Place them 1" deep and 1" apart in rows that are 1-2' apart. Firmly press the soil above the seeds to ensure proper contact for germination, which typically occurs within 5-15 days. Add organic matter or compost for a healthier crop. For best results, companion plant beets with bush beans, onions, or members of the cabbage family; avoid planting near pole beans.

Growing: Each golden beet "seed" contains 8 actual seeds, so thinning seedlings to 3" apart is necessary. Removed plants can be used as a second crop; transplanting will delay them by 2 weeks. Be careful when weeding to avoid damaging seedlings. These beets thrive in cool weather and can withstand temperatures as low as 25F.

Harvesting: Harvest Beets between 1" and 3" for optimal taste and tenderness. Twist off tops 1" up stem to prevent bleeding. Burpee Golden beets have yellow stems and delicious 40-day maturity. 1/3 of tops can be harvested without harming the plant.
