Starting from seed
Start indoors 7–10 weeks before your expected last frost. Sow approximately ¼ inch deep in a clean seed-starting mix. Maintain consistent warmth around 80–85°F and keep the mix evenly moist without waterlogging. Germination may take 1–4 weeks, with timing affected by temperature and moisture.
Provide bright light after emergence. Gradually harden seedlings off before transplanting outdoors after frost danger has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 55°F.
Growing and care
Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. For container growing, use a pot of approximately 5 gallons with drainage holes. Water consistently during dry spells and check container moisture regularly.
Mulch around plants to help conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from stems. Feed according to the directions on a fertilizer suitable for peppers. Avoid excessive fertilizer and prolonged wet soil.
Harvesting
Allow pods to develop their golden yellow-orange mature color. Cut peppers from the plant with garden scissors rather than pulling on branches, and harvest regularly as fruit ripens.
Culinary uses
Add aromatic flavor to rice, beans, stews and soups, or blend into sofrito and Caribbean green seasoning. Use fresh in salsas and salads, roast with vegetables, or pickle using a tested food-preservation recipe. Adjust the quantity to suit your preferred flavor intensity.
