Grow Orange Manzano, also known as rocoto or apple chili, for thick-walled peppers with fruity flavor and substantial heat. These South American peppers are enjoyed fresh in salsas and other dishes. Their distinctive dark seeds and bold flavor make this an unusual addition to a home pepper garden.
At a glance
- Variety: Orange Manzano / rocoto / apple chili
- Botanical name: Capsicum pubescens
- Heat: Approximately 30,000–100,000 Scoville units
- Fruit: Thick-walled; often used fresh
- Growing habit: Can be grown as a perennial where protected from frost
- Available sizes: 10, 25, 100, or 1,000 seeds
Start and grow
Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep in warm seed-starting mix. Pepper seeds can germinate slowly, sometimes taking several weeks, so start early and keep the mix warm, evenly moist, and well ventilated. Harden seedlings off gradually before transplanting once the soil is warm and frost danger has passed.
Choose a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-drained soil. Protect plants from frost; in a suitable warm climate, Manzano can be grown as a longer-lived perennial. The vining growth may benefit from a trellis, and a roomy container is another option.
Harvest and enjoy
Harvest mature peppers with scissors or pruners to avoid damaging the plant. The thick-walled fruit is especially useful fresh in salsas and sauces. Because these peppers can be very hot, wear gloves when handling them, wash your hands afterward, and avoid touching your eyes or face.
