Dominican Sparkle Red Bush Beans
Grown in our Pennsylvania garden, this heirloom bush-type bean is known for bright pink pods and wine-colored seeds. Plants produce runners up to about 3 feet, so staking can help keep the pods off the ground. The beans are also known regionally as Frijol Rojo de Seda.
A Caribbean kitchen favorite
Enjoy these beans in traditional dishes such as Habichuelas Guisadas and Moro de Habichuelas. They can also be served with rice, corn and vegetables, or used in other savory meals.
Planting information
Direct-sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 4 inches apart, with rows spaced 24–30 inches apart. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot and keep the soil evenly moist as plants establish.
Harvesting
Pick pods for fresh use, or leave them on the plants until dry to harvest shelled beans. Cook beans thoroughly before eating.
