Ornamental Kale Seeds – Coral Queen (Brassica oleracea)
Bring bold, sculptural color to your fall and winter garden with Coral Queen Ornamental Kale. Known for its frilly green outer leaves and striking pink, white, or purple centers, this cold-hardy annual thrives when other garden plants fade — making it a standout ornamental filler for flower beds, borders, and containers.
As temperatures drop, Ornamental Kale truly comes alive. Light frosts intensify its vivid coloring, and in mild winters it can persist well into early spring, eventually bolting into an equally attractive display. A versatile performer — beautiful in the landscape and edible in the kitchen.
Growing Guide
Transplant (recommended): Start seeds in cell packs 4–6 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Sow ¼" deep. After germination, grow seedlings at 60°F (16°C) for 3–4 weeks. Harden off for one week before planting out. Set plants outside several weeks before the first fall frost.
Direct Sow: Sow 3 months before expected fall frost, 2 seeds per hole, 6" apart and ¼" deep. Thin to one plant per hole.
Timing: Start seeds 6–10 weeks before the first anticipated frost. Sowing too early in warm weather will delay color development.
Spacing: Plant seeds ⅛" deep, 6" between plants, and 18–24" between rows. Keep soil moist during germination.
Care: Grow in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer several times during the bloom period. Plants are edible — though milder in flavor than culinary kale.
