Tepín Pepper Seeds – O’odham Indian Piquín | Citrusy Super Hot

The Tepín (Capsicum annuum), also known as the O’odham Piquín or Bird Pepper, is one of the oldest and most botanically significant chili peppers in North America — a wild ancestor of many cultivated peppers, grown and revered by the O’odham peoples of the Sonoran Desert for centuries. Don’t be fooled by its tiny, pea-sized pods: at up to 140,000 SHU, this pepper delivers roughly 28 times the heat of a jalapeño. Yet despite its ferocious heat, birds are famously immune to capsaicin and eagerly devour the ripe pods whole — nature’s own seed-dispersal system for this wild chili.

What sets the Tepín apart is not just its heat but its complex, citrusy, smoky flavor that hits fast and dissipates quickly — a bright, clean burn unlike the lingering heat of many superhots. Bushy, ornamental plants grow to approximately 70 cm (28 inches) and produce hundreds of tiny pods throughout a long season. Rare in commercial markets; exceptionally rewarding to grow. Organic.

Planting Guide

  • Start seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost in organic seed-starting mix. Avoid peat pots or plugs — they create moisture imbalance and invite damping off.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep; use a heat mat at 80–85°F for best germination. Germination: 1–4 weeks — Tepín seeds are slow and deliberate; start early and be patient.
  • Seed soak tip: Soak in room-temperature water up to 24 hours before sowing to improve germination speed.
  • Maintain warmth, moderate moisture, and good air circulation throughout germination.
  • Harden off seedlings over 1–2 weeks before transplanting; move outside once nighttime temps reliably stay above 55°F.

Container Growing

  • Thrives in containers — use 5-gallon or larger pots for best root development.
  • Ideal for patios, balconies, and gardeners in short-season climates. Can be overwintered indoors.

Care Requirements

  • Soil: Fertile, well-draining; enrich planting hole with compost; mulch base with 1–2 inches of compost or straw.
  • Sun: Full sun for maximum pod production.
  • Water: Consistent deep watering; soaker hoses during hot or dry spells. At least 1 inch per week.
  • Fertilizer: Slow-release fertilizer at transplant; liquid fertilizer every two weeks once blooms appear; compost tea every few weeks during early growth.
  • Harvest: Use garden scissors — cut, never pull. Harvest pods as they ripen to encourage continued fruiting.

Culinary Uses

  • Crush or grind dried pods over tacos, soups, and grilled meats for intense citrusy heat
  • Infuse whole pods in vinegar or olive oil for a fiery condiment
  • Use in salsas, hot sauces, and pickling brines
  • Dry and powder for spice rubs and seasoning blends
  • Classic ingredient in northern Mexican and Sonoran desert cuisines
