Lupinus texensis โ the Texas Bluebonnet โ is the official state flower of Texas, and one of the most iconic wildflowers in North America. Dense spikes of vivid blue, pea-shaped flowers with conspicuous white tips rise from branching stems clothed in soft, velvety, palmately compound leaves. Fragrant, long-blooming, and beloved by bees, butterflies, and birds, Bluebonnets are equally at home in wildflower meadows, highway plantings, rock gardens, containers, and cottage borders. Like all lupines, they fix atmospheric nitrogen โ improving the soil as they grow.

Growing Guide
Seed prep: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to soften the seed coat and improve germination rates.
Starting indoors: Sow 4โ6 weeks before last frost. Use individual pulp pots โ lupines strongly dislike root disturbance and pulp pots allow transplanting without disturbing roots. Barely cover seeds; keep moist at 68ยฐF until germination (7โ14 days).
Direct sowing (recommended): Sow 1โ2 weeks after the last frost in prepared, well-drained soil. Plant 3โ4 seeds together, 18โ24 inches apart; thin to the strongest plant at 2 inches tall.
Watering: Water well the first season, maintaining 1 inch per week to build deep roots. Established plants are largely drought-adapted and need supplemental water only during prolonged heat or dry spells.
