A Low Carpet of Aromatic Foliage and Pink Flowers
Magic Carpet creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) forms low, spreading growth with aromatic foliage and clusters of small pink flowers. It brings fine texture to sunny rock gardens, border edges, and spaces between widely set stepping stones.
Plant small groups beside a path to enjoy their fragrance when the foliage is lightly brushed, or let them soften the edges of stones. Seed-grown groundcover takes time to fill in, allowing you to develop a planting gradually rather than expecting an instant carpet.

Starting the Tiny Seeds
Use clean containers with drainage and a fine, well-drained seed-starting mix, or sow into a finely prepared outdoor seedbed when local conditions are suitable. Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
- Scatter seeds thinly over the surface.
- Press gently into contact with the mix; do not bury deeply, as light can support germination.
- Mist or water gently to avoid washing seeds away.
- Keep the surface evenly moist, not saturated, and provide airflow.
- Protect outdoor sowings from heavy rain and drying winds.
Germination and early growth vary with temperature, moisture, and growing conditions. Avoid letting the surface dry completely while seeds are germinating, and do not expect a fixed emergence date.
Transplanting and Establishment
When seedlings are large enough to handle, move them into individual containers or thin outdoor seedlings to provide growing room. Gradually harden off indoor-grown plants before transplanting after severe frost danger has passed.
Choose full sun and lean to moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid low spots that stay wet. Water regularly while roots establish, keeping the soil moist but never waterlogged. Keep weeds under control so young plants are not crowded out.
Ongoing Groundcover Care
Once established, adjust watering to rainfall and soil moisture. Containers may dry faster than garden beds. Avoid excessive feeding and persistent wetness. Trim after flowering or as needed to keep growth compact and tidy.
Creeping thyme can tolerate occasional light contact once established, but it is not a turf substitute for heavily traveled paths. Protect seedlings and newly planted areas from foot traffic.
Planning Your Display
Plant in groups and allow time for plants to spread. Coverage depends on spacing, establishment, climate, and care; package size does not guarantee a specific area of coverage. Flowering time and winter survival also vary with local conditions.
Seeds are sold for planting, not direct consumption or sprouting for food.
