Resurrection lily (Lycoris squamigera) is a beautiful and unusual plant with a number of familiar names, including surprise lily, magic lily and naked lily. Strappy green leaves emerge from bulbs in the fall or spring, dying down to leave only tall, bare stems in the summer. In late summer or early autumn, a colorful cluster of striking, fragrant blooms appears on top of each stem. A plant that requires virtually no care at all, resurrection lily is suitable for growing in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 6 through 10.

Plant resurrection lily bulbs in early autumn. Prepare a spot where the resurrection lilies are exposed to a minimum of five to six hours of sunlight daily. Resurrection lilies require well-drained soil and don't tolerate excess moisture. 
Spade or till the soil to a depth of 8 to 10 inches. If the soil is poor or doesn't drain well, dig in 3 to 4 inches of organic matter such as peat moss, compost or manure. 
Dig a hole for each bulb. Plant the bulbs with rounded ends facing down and the neck of the bulbs just above the surface of the soil. Allow approximately 12 inches between each bulb. 
Water immediately to settle the soil and saturate the bulbs. Thereafter, provide about 1 inch of water per week while the plant is actively growing and after the spiky blooms appear. Withhold water and keep the soil as dry as possible when the foliage withers in midsummer. 
Feed the plant once every other year, during the time the plant is actively growing in the spring. Use a general-purpose garden fertilizer applied according to label specifications.
