Planting Guide

  • When to plant: Fall — plant before the ground freezes for a brilliant spring display.
  • Depth: 5–6" deep (12–15 cm) with rich soil above the bulb. Planting deeply keeps bulbs cool, moist, and protected through summer.
  • Spacing: 4–6" apart (10–15 cm) for naturalizing clumps. Plant in distinct groups rather than scattered individually for the best visual impact.
  • Location: Full sun to part shade. Ensure good drainage — avoid areas prone to waterlogging.
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained. Amend with compost before planting if needed.

After Bloom Care

  • Do not cut back or tidy foliage after flowering — leaves must die back naturally so bulbs can replenish their food reserves for next year’s blooms.
  • Apply a liquid fertilizer while foliage is still green to benefit bulbs in poorer soils.
  • Once foliage has fully yellowed and died back, it can be tidied away.
  • Divide congested clumps every 4–5 years in summer (after foliage dies back) to maintain vigor and maximize flower production.
