Growing Guide

Seed prep: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to aid germination.

Starting indoors: Sow in peaty starter trays 6–8 weeks before last frost. Barely cover seeds; press into soil surface. Keep moist at 68°F; germination in 7–14 days. Transplant at 4 inches tall once frost danger has passed.

Direct sowing: Sow outdoors after frost in prepared, well-drained soil. Plant 3–4 seeds together, 18–24 inches apart; thin to the strongest plant at 2 inches.

Watering: Water well the first season (1 inch/week). Established plants are largely drought-tolerant and require irrigation only during prolonged heat or dry periods.

Deadheading: Remove spent spikes to extend blooming and prevent unwanted self-seeding if desired.

Seed saving: Watch pods carefully as they ripen — they split and drop seed quickly. Collect pods when they begin to turn brown; spread to dry and remove seeds for storage in a cool, dry place.

Cut flowers: Cut stems when lower flowers on the spike have just opened. Strip foliage below the waterline and place immediately in water.
