One of Nature’s Most Nutritious & Medicinally Powerful Herbs
Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of the most nutritionally dense and medicinally potent wild herbs on earth — a perennial powerhouse loaded with iron, vitamins A and C, calcium, and flavonoids. Used for centuries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas as a food, medicine, and fiber plant, Stinging Nettle is an essential addition to any serious medicinal herb garden. Heirloom, Non-GMO seeds.
Why Grow Stinging Nettle?
- Exceptional Nutritional Herb: Young spring tops (top 4–5 inches before flowering) are harvested and cooked like spinach — rich in iron, vitamins, and minerals. The sting disappears completely with cooking or drying.
- Renowned Medicinal Uses: Clinically studied for arthritis relief, urinary tract support, BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), allergy reduction, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
- Garden Ecosystem Builder: A vital plant for butterfly larvae — particularly tortoiseshell and red admiral species. Supports the broader garden food web.
- Hardy Perennial: Returns year after year in USDA Zones 3–10 with virtually no care. Contains it well in a designated garden area to manage its spreading habit.
- Fiber & Dye Plant: Historically used as a textile fiber and natural plant dye — a fascinating ethnobotanical heritage plant.
Growing Guide
Mix small seeds with garden sand and cold-stratify (freeze) for several weeks before sowing to improve germination. Start indoors in covered trays to maintain moisture, then transplant 3–4 inch seedlings. Or direct sow outdoors in late fall for natural overwintering. Space plants in a designated area and use gloves when handling — the sting is neutralized by cooking, drying, or blanching. Height: 24–36 inches.
