Ruffled Rose-Peach Flowers with Violet Beards

Concertina is an intermediate bearded iris with ruffled flowers in dusty rose to light peach tones, accented by purple-blue shading and violet beards. Its fragrance and softly blended colors make it a distinctive addition to sunny perennial borders and cutting gardens.

Plant a small group where the flowers can be enjoyed close to a path, or pair with contrasting foliage for a spring focal point. Concertina has reblooming potential, but later-season flowering depends on climate, establishment, and care rather than occurring reliably in every garden.

What You Receive

  • Variety: Bearded iris 'Concertina'.
  • Type: Intermediate bearded iris.
  • Product: Bare-root rhizomes for planting, not seeds or flowering potted plants.
  • Pack options: Choose 1, 3, or 10 rhizomes.
  • Flowers: Ruffled dusty rose-peach tones with violet beards and purple-blue accents.
  • Fragrance: Fragrant flowers.
  • Bloom season: Spring, with possible later rebloom under suitable conditions.

Flower color varies with light and growing conditions. Newly planted rhizomes need time to establish, and first-season flowering or rebloom is not guaranteed.

Arrival Care and Planting

Unpack promptly and inspect the rhizomes. Keep them in a dry, airy, sheltered location if planting must be delayed briefly; do not leave them sealed in damp packaging. Follow the stock-specific instructions supplied with your order and choose planting timing suited to your local climate.

  • Choose full sun and well-drained soil.
  • Prepare a shallow planting area with room to spread the roots downward and outward.
  • Keep the top of the rhizome at or near the soil surface rather than burying it deeply.
  • Firm soil around the roots and water to settle, allowing excess water to drain.
  • Leave space for clumps to expand and maintain airflow around the rhizomes.

Watering and Feeding

Water as needed during establishment without keeping the rhizomes constantly wet. Check moisture during dry weather, especially when plants are actively growing. Avoid waterlogged soil and mulch piled over the rhizomes.

Feed according to soil needs and the label of a fertilizer suitable for bearded iris. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Local climate and seasonal conditions influence flowering; do not assume the plant will perform equally in every region.

After Flowering and Division

Remove spent flower stems while retaining healthy green foliage. Trim damaged leaves with clean tools and clear away decaying material. Inspect for iris borers, rot, and other problems so they can be addressed promptly.

Divide crowded clumps approximately every 3–4 years, using locally appropriate timing after flowering and allowing time for re-establishment before severe weather. Replant healthy divisions shallowly in well-drained soil.

Ornamental Plant Safety

Harmful if eaten. Do not consume rhizomes or other plant parts. Keep away from children and pets that may chew them. Wear gloves if sensitive to plant sap and wash hands after handling.
