Bring delicate spring color to the front of a border with Narcissus 'Hawera', a miniature Triandrus-type daffodil. Its pale lemon-yellow flowers nod above slender stems, with swept-back outer petals and small central cups. Plant a group beside a path, in a rock garden, or in a well-drained pot to enjoy the detail of these small blooms up close.

When and where to plant

Plant in fall before the ground freezes, allowing time for roots to establish. Choose well-drained soil and avoid spots that collect standing water. Incorporate compost where needed before planting.

Daffodils need seasonal conditions suited to bulb growth and flowering. In warm-winter areas, check local guidance on suitability and any chilling requirements before planting. Flowering and repeat performance depend on climate, drainage, and care.

Planting guide

  1. Keep bulbs cool, dry, and ventilated until planting.
  2. Plant pointed ends upward. Aim for a planting hole approximately three times the bulb's height, adjusting for local soil conditions.
  3. Space bulbs approximately 4–6 inches apart. Arrange in groups for a more noticeable display.
  4. Backfill gently and water to settle the soil. Keep the bed moist during establishment without waterlogging.

For containers, use a well-drained potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. Protect container-grown bulbs from severe temperature extremes as appropriate to your climate.

Spring care

Maintain moderate moisture while leaves and flowers are growing. Feed if needed according to soil conditions and the directions on a fertilizer suitable for flowering bulbs. Remove faded flowers if desired, leaving stems and foliage that are still green.

After flowering

Leave foliage in place until it yellows and dies back naturally so bulbs can replenish their reserves. Do not tie or cut off green leaves. Tidy away dead foliage once it has fully dried.

In suitable conditions, Hawera can form larger clumps over time. If clumps become crowded or flowering declines, lift and divide after the foliage has died back, then replant in an appropriate position. Multiplication and repeat blooms are not guaranteed.

Handling precautions

Daffodil bulbs and other plant parts are toxic if eaten. Keep away from children and pets, and store separately from onions and other edible bulbs. Wear gloves if handling causes skin irritation. These bulbs are for ornamental planting, not consumption.
