Bay Leaf: 5 Seeds

The Timeless Mediterranean Herb Behind Every Great Soup & Stew

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis), also known as Sweet Bay, True Laurel, Grecian Laurel, or Bay Tree, is one of the most storied culinary herbs in history — the crowning herb of Mediterranean kitchens and the essential leaf in Bouquet Garni, classic French stocks, Italian ragù, and Caribbean soups. This aromatic evergreen tree, native to the Mediterranean, can be grown from seed and shaped into a beautiful container specimen, pruned hedge, or landscape shrub.

Why Grow Bay Laurel?

  • Essential Culinary Herb: Fresh or dried leaves add a deep, spicy, aromatic flavor to soups, stews, braised meats, stocks, tomato sauces, and rice dishes. A fundamental building block of world cuisine.
  • Bouquet Garni Staple: The central herb in classic French and Mediterranean herb bundles alongside thyme, parsley, and rosemary.
  • Beautiful Landscape & Container Plant: An elegant evergreen that can be grown as a patio container specimen, shaped into a topiary, or planted as a feature tree in warm climates (Zones 8–11).
  • Long Shelf Life: Dried leaves hold flavor well for up to a year — a single plant provides a generous supply for the kitchen and gifts.

Growing Guide

Soak seeds in water and let stand for 24 hours before sowing. Sow seed ⅜ inch deep; tamp the soil and mulch the seed bed. Germination is slow — be patient and provide warmth (germinates faster in warmer temperatures). Bay Laurel is slow-growing but long-lived and rewards patient growers with decades of harvests.
